A fat quarter and a thin (long) quarter are both quarter yard/metre cuts of fabric, but they are measured and cut differently:
Fat quarter yard measures 18in x 22in (fat quarter metre measures 19in x 22in)
Thin (long) quarter yard measures 9in x 44in (long quarter metre measures 10in x 44in)
